X2: X-Men United come out May 02, 2003. It made 85 million it's first weekend! It was directed by Bryan Singer.

Picking up where the last movie left off, Wolverine is on a quest to find out more about his origin. Magneto, the X-Men's worst enemy, is   still trapped in a plastic prison where his power of magnesium has no affect. Mystique has taken the disguise of Senator Kelly. And a new   mutant called Nightcrawler makes an attack on the white house. The main villain in the film, William Stryker, reissues the Mutant   Registration Act, resulting in an attack on Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Enemies and allies alike come together to save the   mutant race. I won't spoil the ending for those of you who haven't see the movie, but I will say that they made it very entertaining for the   comic book crowd, in a surprising scene involving Jean Grey. Without fully spoiling things, I will rely on the fact that those with knowledge   of X-Men history have an understanding of what really happened, and a clue of what might happen in the future sequel, for which the film   begs for.

Also in this movie Rogue and Bobby (Iceman) are dating.

"Mutation. It is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet.   This process is slow and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward."
  - Dr. Jean Grey
